Caves Near Cairns

The Chillagoe karst landscape holds more than 600 caves, but only three are open to the public year-round: Donna, Trezkinn, and Royal Arch. Each tour lasts approximately one hour and descends into chambers lined with stalactites, helictites, and flowstone formations that began forming in the Devonian period. The limestone itself is a fossil reef, and sections of cave wall preserve ancient coral structures and marine organisms that predate the Australian landmass as we know it. Caves near Cairns are limited to this site and a handful of smaller, undeveloped systems scattered across the Atherton Tablelands. Chillagoe remains the only location offering daily ranger-led access, infrastructure for visitors, and geological interpretation on-site. The drive from Cairns follows the Kennedy Highway through Mareeba and into progressively drier country; the transition from rainforest to semi-arid savanna is stark, and the red karst towers that announce Chillagoe appear suddenly against flat scrubland. Each showcave tour is capped at a small group size, and rangers control entry to protect the formations. Photography is permitted, but tripods and artificial lighting beyond a phone torch are not. The temperature inside holds steady at around 20 degrees Celsius regardless of the surface heat, and humidity is high. Tour commentary focuses on speleothem growth rates, the hydrology of the karst system, and the relationship between the caves and the surrounding Tower karst topography. No prior caving experience is required, but visitors descend metal staircases and navigate uneven rock floors. The site operates under Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service management, and the ranger station at 21–23 Queen Street in Chillagoe township handles all bookings and tour departures. Walk-ins are accepted when capacity allows, but tours can fill quickly during school holidays and the dry season months between May and October. The wet season between December and March brings afternoon storms that occasionally delay tours but rarely close the site entirely.
